Sara’s Revision of Ogdoecosta

Congratulations to doctoral candidate, Sara López-Pérez, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México on the publication of the genus revision that she led.  We have worked together for several years now, with Sara visiting my lab twice and finally our collaboration has a fruit with the first paper published today.  This genus revision has 12 species, including a new species.  It is centered in Mexico and presented a complicated taxonomic problem to sort out its distinction from several related genera in the tortoise beetle tribe Mesomphaliini. The host plant is Ipomoea species (morning glory, bindweed), the vine that is so popular with tortoise beetles world-wide and which is a good one to search for in any habitat.  It is a real pleasure to collaborate with Sara, to watch a new expert of Cassidinae develop, and for me to learn some new things about these fascinating beetles.
